PREREQUISITE:
EDUC 401/402, or equivalent.
DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:
This course will focus on English as a distinct discipline in which reading, writing,
listening, and speaking serve a primary goal: to develop a student's understanding
and appreciation of language and its power to shape meaning and experience.
Special attention will be given to the following:
Response to Literature
The Writing Process
Grouping Strategies
Communication and Group Interaction
Evaluation Procedures
OBJECTIVES:
1)
To develop a repertoire of strategies for teaching literature that will encourage
genuine response in the reader.
2)
To develop an understanding and appreciation of the writing process as a
dynamic method for encouraging independent student learning.
3)
To explore a variety of grouping strategies which will encourage effective
student interactions and student-centered learning.
4)
To develop skill in the development of student assignments as well as
appropriate evaluation procedures.
TYPICAL ASSIGNMENTS:
1)
The production by a
4-student group
of a
single course
of study for English
9.
2)
A research paper into a relevant area of interest to be presented to the group.
3)
A single lesson reflecting your understanding of the discipline and your
philosophy to be presented twice - once early in the course and a second time
at its conclusion.
REQUIRED TEXTS:
Students are not required to purchase texts. We will collect a set of necessary
resources at the beginning of the course.
