    DESIGNS FOR LEARNING: SECONDARY LANGUAGE ARTS
    Course Description
    The course will provide students with an opportunity to identify, consider,
    and practice effective strategies for teaching secondary English. Participants
    will study the implications of research findings regarding the teaching of
    writing, and explore the writing process in a workshop setting. The group will
    also investigate models for structuring the study of literature, and examine
    a unit which links local and regional literature to works more universal in
    nature. As time permits, the class will explore the integration of specialized
    techniques (i.e. media, drama, speaking, problem-solving) with the teaching of
    writing and literature.

    1. The Writing Process

    Research on composing
    b. The Writing process: prewriting, drafting, revision, editing,
    publication, evaluation, motivation

    Creating an encouraging environment for writing
    d. Evaluating student writing
    e. Publishing student work
    2. Teaching Literature
    a.
    Expansions: local-regional- national-universal
    b. Thematic approaches
    c.
    Genre studies
    3. Integrations
    a.
    Linking student writing with literature study
    b. Specialized techniques (i.e. media, drama, speaking,
    problem solving)
    Requirements
    1.
    Participation in the writing workshop and completion of weekly
    writing assignments.
    2.
    Active discussion of assigned readings.

    Grading will be based upon:

    and instructor.
