    This course is offered to students and practicing teachers who wish to explore
    the curriculum area and approach to learning called the Language Arts. The course
    is designed to introduce you to planning for learning, creating learning environ-
    ments, and developing strategies, techniques, and materials in Language Arts in
    the elementary school.
    Experiences in Language Arts will be provided through workshop presentations,
    seminars, individualized tasks and group activities. The topics covered will
    include:
    • curriculum development in Language Arts -- diagnosing needs, setting
    objectives, planning, implementing, evaluating;
    • reading - instructional approaches, materials, and programs; children's
    literature; relationship to writing;
    • writing - fostering and developing written expression; tools and techniques
    convention in writing (including spelling, punctuation, etc.): grammar;
    usage;
    * aural-oral aspects of the Language Arts -- fostering and developing
    skills of listening and speaking; drama; media;
    * thinking - the fifth Language Art
    * integration of Language Arts with other areas of curriculum.
    REQUIREMENTS:
    Students will be required to choose a major curriculum project for in-depth
    independent study. Through this project, each student will explore the theoretical
    background of a chosen topic by writing a discussion paper and will demonstrate
    practical classroom application by making a project presentation in class. In
    addition, students will be required to attend and participate in all parts of
    the course; complete required readings; respond to brief in-class assignments;
    demonstrate competancy in selected small group activities.
