    The purpose of this course is to introduce students and practicing teachers
    to methods and materials to be used in teaching language arts in the elem-
    entary school. The course is designed to demonstrate by its organization,
    as well as its content, approaches to and principles behind the teaching of
    language arts. While learning about concepts and principles, students will
    also be able to develop specific competencies related to teaching language
    arts.
    The following topics will be explored through seminar, lecture and reading:
    a. Language growth in children
    b. Activities leading to language growth
    I. Creative movement
    2. Oral activities:
    Creative drama
    Group discussion and other informal talk
    Prepared talk in the classroom
    3.
    Written activities:
    Writing poetry
    Writing prose
    Written language skills (usage, semantics, spell-
    ing and punctuation)
    4. Games
    5.
    The Use of literature in the language arts class
    Student requi rements:
    1.
    To attend and participate in all parts of the program--- lectures, seminars,
    demonstrations and reading tasks.
    2.
    Complete 10 self-selected readings and related job cards. The student can
    pace himself and turn in completed work any time during the term. All work
    must be completed by

    Plan a lesson on any of the topics listed above. Perform the lesson with
    a group of children in any local school. Turn in self-evaluation and teacher
    evaluation of the lesson during the final interview with instructor.
    (Evaluations of lessons should not be confused with student evaluations of
    the course. For explanation of the latter, see below.)
    Student Evaluation:
    Student evaluation + Faculty evaluation = Grade Selection
    Self-evaluation. Students will assess their fulfillment of the course require-
    ments in a self-evaluation instrument provided at the end of the term.
    Faculty evaluation. Students will discuss their self-evaluation with the in-
    structor in a iFil interview, during which time the instructor willalso assess
    student performance.
