COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will examine the conceptual and theoretical foundations of contemporary curriculum
theory. The overall goal of the course is to develop a critical framework for students to acquire an
understanding of the prevailing discourses that shape curriculum development. The course will pay
special attention to the historical, social and political forces that influence curriculum development
including class, gender, race and corporate dynamics. Rather than focusing on the coherence of one
major theory of curriculum, this course aims to provide access to the critical and complex field of
curriculum theory and to develop analytical tools for students. Other curriculum areas will be
explored based on student interest and presentations.
