COURSE OUTLINE:
This course is divided into three main sections. First, there will be a consideration
of educational curricula and the nature of knowledge; the concepts of teaching and
learning; child centred curricula; and the student-teacher relationship in the
classroom. Second, students will look at curriculum development, content,
integration, and evaluation; the social and political contexts of curriculum
development; and strategies for curriculum change. Finally, students will examine
aspects of the Year 2000 curriculum proposals and engage in some case studies
applying the theory that we have studied.
EXPECTATIONS:
Participants are expected to attend all seminars and to take part in discussions
and other in- class activities. This will require carefull study of assigned readings
before the seminar.
ASSIGNMENTS:
1.
Class presentation (20%)
Students will make a brief presentation to the class on an aspect of curriculum
development. A schedule will be established at the first seminar and a selection of
topics made available. Students will also be able to suggest their own topics.
2. Paper (4017o)
The paper will build on the class presentation - its foundation will be the material
presented to the class which will be re-written on the basis of the critique provided
by the students and the instructor.
3.
Curriculum project (40%)
This project will be in the student's area of interest and will be prepared in such a
way that it could be implemented in a school. It should satisfy three major criteria:-
* demonstration of student's growth in the area of curriculum development
• suitability for use in a school
• compatability with the Year 2000 program.
