Students in this course will practice teaching ESL by means of two unique methods that are based on new
psychological theories, in contrast to the commonly used methods in second language teaching which are
based on linguistic theories. These new methods are (1) Counselling-Learned, also called Community
Language Learning, and (2) Suggestopedia. The first was developed by an American psychologist who
created it in order to deal with the fear of language learning exhibited by learners and the resultant behavior
problems. The second method was developed by a Bulgarian psychiatrist who wished to ally teaching
methods with recent research in brain function and with Far Eastern philosophies, such as Yoga.
Students will read the texts (see below) and background readings relevant to them in areas such as
psychology, brain function and Yoga and practice techniques used in each method in classroom
simulations of each method. Teams of students will create videotapes which demonstrate each method in
use and will write up critiques of their own videos. Videotaping and practice of each method will be done
during the class sessions of this course.
Student progress will be evaluated on the following basis:
Videotape I
?
25% of grade
Individual Paper I
?
25% of grade
Videotape II
?

Individual Paper II
?

Teams will make the in-class videotapes of their own teaching and each member of the team will write a 3-5
page paper analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the method as demonstrated on the team's video.
