PREREQUISITE
60 credit hours and some basic music knowledge with, preferably, some teaching experience.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed for
all
students who are interested in the aesthetics of music. It is NOT a
performance course. As such, it is intended for any student who has a general or specific interest in
the arts. In no way is it required or necessary to be able to read musical notation. The course is
based on readings which discuss the history of musical aesthetics and education. As well, students
will have the opportunity to view and listen to tapes of music in various social, historical and world
contexts.
OBJECTIVE
Reading, listening and viewing activities should develop an awareness of the aesthetic complexity of
sound in world musics and help students plan an integrated curriculum for music and the arts in general.
REQUIREMENTS
1.
Write two brief essays (3-5 pages each worth 15%) - 30%
2.
Write a major paper (8-10 pages due by the last class) - 25%
3. Participation and Presentation on required readings - 15%
4. Final Exam - 30%
