INSTRUCTION: TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
PREREQUISiTES:
60 hours of credit. A lower level linguistics course.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides practising and pre-service teachers with an
overview of principles of teaching English as a second language.
Students will become familiar with a variety of current ESL
teaching/learning methodologies, and through discussion of these will
develop a personal theory of language teaching. In addition, students
will discuss the characteristics of ESL learners, and explore the cultural
implications of acquiring a new language. Other topics to be covered
include classroom management, language teaching techniques, and
basic principles of English grammar and phonology.
