    OBJECTIVES
During this course a selection of theoretical and empirical data concerning
linguistic, psychological and socio-cultural topics will be presented as back-
ground for the assessment of a variety of issues in teaching ESL. Class participants
will acquire skills in using these data to analyse the language and social
development of students. The major focus however, is on developing competency
in utilising and integrating the background data in the preparation of unit plans,
lesson plans and instructional materials. To accomodate this, each class session
will include both lecture and workshop components. A variety of approaches and
materials will be surveyed during the course, although participants will focus
their workshop activities and assignments on an educational setting of their choice.
