SUBTOPIC The phonology of English for classroom purposes.
Anticipating promunciation difficulties of selected language groups.
SUBTOPIC The syntax of English for classroom purposes.
Anticipating syntactical errors of selected language groups.
Approaching, methods and techniques in teaching English as a second language.
Psychological and linguistic theories that have influenced second language
pedagogy.
Evaluating prepared programs, textbooks and series.
Preparing curriculum and creative programs for special needs.
The E.S.L. classroom - organization, pace, variety and interaction.
ASSIGNMENTS:
1. A weekly ttquiz

based on the readings and lectures.
2.
Contrast the sound system of English with the sound systems o:F another
language in order to be able to aniticipate the pronunciation difficulties
of a student from that language group
OR
Compare certain aspects of English syntax with the syntax of another language.
3.
Major paper: prepare for 15 hours of a course given to a specific group
of students who are in the classroom for stated
p
eriods. (The time period
will depend upon your particular situation).
In order to do this paper it is essential that you:
a)
are teaching or have taught an E.S.L. class recently
b)
have a class which you may attend as an observer or assistant
Try to make arrangements for this before the course begins.
TEXTBOOKS:
1.
There are no required textbooks, however, a number of articles will be taken
from volumes 2 and 3 of 'The Edinburgh Course in Applied Linguistics" (J.P.B.
Allen and others) if you wish to buy texts for your
personal use.
2.
You should have some idea of the different E.S.L. textbook series available
in Vancouver teaching centres. You will be required to bring examples of
some of these texts to class at a later point in the course for purposes
of analysis.
