This course will study selected aspects of children's literature which will exemplify the following:
• the meaning of story
• the history of children's literature
• defining children's literature
• literacy learning - where reading fits in the big picture
• emergent reading
• examining children's books for suitability to children's stages of development
• methods of sharing literature
• studying genre (i.e., folklore, picture books, novels)
• examining themes and issues (i.e., family, friendship, fears, death)
• examining cross cultural literature
OBJECTIVES
The course is designed to introduce you to a study of the scope and the selected aspects of literature
for children. You will examine:
• a representative sampling of children's literature
• ways of choosing appropriate literature for children
• methods of using literature with children
The course will comprise a broad range of experiences. These will include professional readings
and reflections, discussion and written response, individualized tasks and small-group work.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
1. Completion of short oral and written assignments to be shared in class:
library visits, quote summaries, preparation for discussions - 25%
2.
Read aloud reflection - 25%
3. Reflection on readings (term paper) - 25%
4.
Annotated bibliography to accompany a novel or picture book assignment - 25%
No scheduled Final Exam.

available to children today and to give you an opportunity to explore and
understand children's literature in greater depth, e.g. children's traditional
literature, folk and fairy tale.
2.
To introduce you to ways of bringing children and books together through
such strategies as: reading aloud, and other simple forms of presenting
literature; storytelling and dramatic presentation; setting up and running
independent reading programs.
PREREQUISITE:
