COURSE OUTLINE
Those who enroll in this course will examine historical trends, philosophical issues and
instructional research relating to early childhood education. They will also engage in
exercises intended to show how philosophical and empirical research are relevant to
classroom instruction of young children. Although the course deals mainly with
theoretical issues, there is a practical aspect as well. Students will be asked to design an
instructional unit suitable for an elementary school classroom.
Students and teachers with an interest in the current changes to British Columbia's
education system might find this course particularly interesting as some of the issues to be
discussed will be relevant to understanding "Primary Program."
Topics to be discussed will be selected from the following areas:
- Historical Perspectives in ECE
- Planning Strategies for the ECE Curriculum
- Motivation and self-concept in the Classroom
- Play as an Educational Activity
- Whole Language/Basal Approaches to language instruction
- Direct instruction in the ECE Classroom
