COURSE OUTLINE
Those who enroll in this course will examine historical trends, philosophical
issues and instructional research relating to early childhood education. They
will also engage in exercises intended to show how philosophy and research are
relevant to classroom instruction of young children. Although the course deals
mainly with theoretical issues, there is a practical aspect as well. Students will
be asked to design a lesson compatible with a theme to be announced in the first
week of lectures and present this lesson to the class during the course.
Students and teachers with an interest in the current changes to British
Columbia's education system might find this course particularly interesting as
some of the issues to be discussed will be selected from "Primary Program."
Topics to be discussed include:
• Historical perspectives in ECE
- Pestalozzi to Piaget
• Planning strategies for the ECE curriculum
• Development of motivation and self-concept in the classroom
• Play as an educational activity
• Whole language/basal approaches to language instruction
• Direct instruction in the ECE classroom
