COURSE OUTLINE:
This course examines current trends, issues and research relating to the
education of young children. Students enrolled in this course will examine a
selection of philosophical and psychological issues relevant to the
education of children in primary grades. As a consequence
of this
examination, students will be able to place current issues in an historical
perspective and be in a position to offer constructive comment on some
current points of concern in the field.
Topics to be discussed include:
- Relationships between early childhood education, education in later
years, child care and schooling.
- The nature of child centered education. Topics will include: needs and
interests of learners, growth and development as metaphors in early
childhood education, and the place of aims in early childhood education.

Instructional strategies, including an examination of direct instruction,
play, and naturalistic learning.
- The importance of language experience and basal reader programs.
