    COURSE OUTLINE
This course examines current trends, issues and research relating to
the education of young children. Students enrolled in this course will
examine a selection of philosophical and psychological issues relevant to
the education of children in primary grades. As a consequence of this
examination, students will be able to place current issues in an
historical perspective and be in a position to offer constructive comment
on some current points of concern in the field.
    Topics to be discussed include:
    - Relationships between early childhood education, education in later
    years, child care and schooling.
    - The nature of child centered education. Topics will include: needs
and interests of learners, growth and development as metaphors in
early childhood education, and the place of aims in early childhood
    education.
    - Instructional strategies, including an examination of direct
    instruction, play, and naturalistic learning.
