    PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FALL
    1974

    . ?
    .
    TT4P PTTRPUSF.
The Specific Minor in Early Childhood Education (ECE) is designed
to prepare students to specialize in the teaching of children at the
    preschool, kindergarten, and primary levels.
    THE PROFESSIONAL OBJECTIVE
The decision to specialize in Early Childhood Education is an
ambitious one. In general, ECE teachers have more responsibility
for the design of their educational programs than other teachers.
The preschool and kindergarten curriculum guides are usually less
helpful and explicit than those for Grade One. With young children,
the routes to learning are often less direct, with less formal forms
    of instruction than direct teaching.
The objective of the Minor, therefore, is to train students to cope
with the kinds of educational problems they will encounter in the
schools, and to do so sensitively, intelligently, and articulately.
Some of the problems will be specific to teaching young children.
Others will be general to education.
    WHO SHOULD APPLY
Applications for the ECE Specific Minor are invited from any student
interested in preparing to teach young children and prepared to
commit himself to an arduous educational program. Prior experience
with young children is not a prerequisite for application.
Limited faculty resources require that enrollment be limited to 30
students. Applications will be reviewed and the selection will be
based on an assessment of each student's special interests and
demonstrated competence. This judgment of potential teaching ability
will be made in consultation with the student, his Faculty Associate,
    and a Faculty Professor.
    HOW TO APPLY
An application form accompanies this announcement. Interested students
should complete and return their applications as soon as they have
made their decision. The deadline for the return of forms is October
    11, 1974.
Additional information and advice can be obtained by contacting either
Dr. Sheila O'Connell, Em. 108, or Dr. Roger Gehlbach, Em. 102, in
    Building #1, Faculty of Education.

    EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
    The Specific Minor
    PROGRAM OF STUDY
    EDUCATION 402 - Intense Exposure
This phase of the program is designed to expose and only partially
educate students in the fundamental knowledge and critical issues
    of the profession.
Seminars will be scheduled on topics requiring background reading
and group discussion. Readings will be drawn from a variety of
sources and condensed or exerpted for efficient study.
Workshops will be held to utilize group efforts to produce ideas
and/or materials that will be of practical value in later classroom
    work.
Brown-bag lunch sessions will feature films, guest speakers, and
    informal discussions of selected topics.
Self-instructional mini-courses will be available to enable students
to gain basic knowledge in certain topics by means of concise readings
    and self-check response forms.
    EDUCATION 405 - "In-Scho1' Experience
The purpose of this return to the classroom is to enable students to
reflect on their developing impressions and points of view in the
presence of real children in real classroom situations. In order to
enable students to work confidently with children of any age from three
to eight, a special dual-placement provision has been made for this
component of the PDP. One placement will be in a preschool for three
and four yearolds, and the second will be in a kindergarten.
This experience, coupled with occasional on-campus seminars, will
provide students with abundant opportunity to gain a clear perspective
on all aspects of child growth during a period of very rapid develop-
    ment.
    EDUCATION 404 - Specialized Coursework
A program of coursework will be worked out for each student in the
ECE Specific Minor that will be appropriate to his and his advisor's
assessment of his remaining educational needs. Normally, the
requirements for this phase of the program are met in a single term.
