OVERVIEW OF THE COURSE
Consideration is given in this course to the pedagogical principles underlying the development of
physical education programs for the elementary grades in British Columbia schools. These
pedagogical principles, derived from a theoretically-informed reflection on students
engagement in selected instructional activities, will be applied to matters of curriculum design,
teaching strategy, pupil progress and program evaluation.
COURSE CONTENT
Lectures on the pedagogical foundations of physical education will be combined with practical
sessions in activity settings that exhibit varying degrees of structure. From the open activity
settings of parks and outdoor spaces to the closed setting of the school gymnasium, students will
participate in instructional activities that provide insight into the dynamics of effective
pedagogy in physical education.
