    PREREQUISITE:
    Educ. 401/402 or equivalent. P.E. minors only.
    OVERVIEW OF THE COURSE:
    This course along with Educ. 479 is designed to assist teachers in planning and implementing
    physical education programs for the elementary grades in British Columbia schools. Educ. 459
    will involve a practical consideration of instructional strategies and curriculum planning in
    elementary physical education, particularly as it applies to the games, dance and gymnastics
    components of the curriculum.
    The curricular organizing principles are:
    1. To provide teachers with an understanding of different approaches to curriculum
    development, instructional strategies, and pupil assessment in physical education.
    2.
    To examine various practical applications of the theoretical perspectives listed above,
    especially as they apply to games, gymnastics and dance.
    3.
    To increase personal competence in physical education activities.
    CURRICULAR CONTENT:
    Topics such as pupil assessment, intramurals, lesson and unit planning, active health and daily
    physical education will complement the major curricular themes of games, gymnastics and dance.
    ASSIGNMENTS:
    1.
    Program overview of a proposed elementary intramural program (20%).
    2.
    Development of a compendium of pupil assessment stra9gies that includes a theoretical
    rationale and identification of strengths and limitations for each assessment strategy (20%).
    3.
    An eight lessonteaching unit based upon a theme, concept or notion of movement
    experience as it pertains to the areas of games, gymnastics or dance (30%).
    4.
    Two twenty minute lessons to be taught, one each from the areas of games, gymnastics and
    dance not used in the unit plan (20%).
    5.
    Class participation (10%).

    I just received word yesterday that four students have permission
    from Steve Smith to take Educ 459. These students are not ELPE
    students. Almost all the registration forms have now been
    processed, so they will need to be added once they discover they
    haven't been put into the course.
