DESCRIPTION:
This course deals with theory, curricula and methodologies in Drama Education.
Topics we will consider include the following: the aims of Drama Education; drama and theatre; drama
as methodology; group dynamics; student-teacher relations; creative drama; integrating the arts;
improvisation; storytelling; readers theatre; and, playbuilding.
COURSE AND ASSIGNMENTS:
This course will focus around three inter-rlated goals: (1) to
provide a wide range of experiences for students to practice teaching/coaching/di
?
theatre
games/activities/lessons to their peers; (2) to encourage students to make connections about their
learning through the engagement of a collaborative play-creating process, which will lead to the creation
of an original script; and, (3) to find natural ways to present the performance of tlie script in various
educational settings. ?
I
The main purpose of integrating these three goals is to use the discipline of theatr to understand more
about secondary theatre education. Through the embodiment of an integrated and meaningful theatre
process, students are more likely to make deeper and more meaningful
connectiortts
between teaching,
learning, and theatre performance. Evaluation and assessment will be discussed 4luring the first class.
