DESCRIPTION
This course deals with theory, curricula and methodologies in drama education. Topics will include
selections from the following: aims of drama education; drama as methodology; role of the teacher in
the drama classroom; evaluating students in drama classes; creative drama; the use of improvisation
and storytelling; incorporating film and video work into drama classes; developing major projects
with students such as choral dramatization, docudrama, sociodrama, anthology, and readers theatre;
introducing scene work, stagecraft, and theatre history.
OBJECTIVES
1. To introduce and acquaint students to a variety of approaches, techniques, sources and
pedagogical issues related to drama teaching.
2. To encourage critical discussion regarding the theoretical grounding for drama education.
3. To invite personal narrative, reflective practice, and spontaneous creation into the collective
environment of the drama classroom.
REQUIREMENTS
• Leading warm-up activities, and active participation in class projects - 10%
• Role Drama Project - 10%
• Docudrama/Sociodrama Project or Myth Project - 10%
• Written Reflections and Case Narrative Responses - 15%
• Production Concept Project or Theatre History Project - 25%
• Development of a Written Drama Unit - 30%
