PREREQUISITE
60 hours of credit. Prior background in art not necessary.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Major conception of educational value in the contemporary arts and application of these ideas
to the development of visual arts programs in the schools.
The class will be in a seminar/studio format.
• Current issues (Postmodernism, Feminism, Multiculturalism, and First Nations Issues)
• Developing personal and collaborative approaches to art-making
• Teaching, responding to, integrating, and evaluating visual art
• Discipline-based art education and other curricula
• The aesthetic dimension
• Children and art
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
1. Class presentation of readings from one of the topics - 25%
2. "The art teacher's journal" - 20%
This may be a scrapbook of clippings, a sketchbook, written observations, etc... a combination
of all forms of expression (A project with a personal touch)
3. Studio activity which the student will lead based on a lesson plan - 25%
4. Final essay on a curriculum proposal- 30%
