DESCRIPTION
This course critically examines some contemporary perspectives in art and art education
and applies these ideas to the development and teaching of visual arts programs in schools.
OUTLINE OF TOPICS
Concepts of art; aims of art education; the aesthetic in art; postmodernism; artistic
creativity; discipline-based art education; social perspectives; children and art; practical
issues in program planning; gender issues; multicultural art programs; standards in art;
evaluation; education and popular art; art education and politics; collaborative learning
in the art class; ecology and art; understanding art; Year 2000; imagination and the
teaching of art; art history old and new; integrating the arts.
REQUIREMENTS
Students will be expected to give a class presentation, write two papers and participate in a
studio activity that expresses some of the key ideas of the course.
