DESCRIPTION
This course examines major conceptions of value in the
contemporary arts andapplies these ideas to the development of
visual arts programs in schools.
OUTLINE OF TOPICS
Conflicting conceptions of purpose in art education: different
aesthetic positions; the aesthetic dimension in art and life; fine and
popular art in education; questions of excellence and elitism; ethnic
and gender concerns; art education in a pluralistic society; matters
of tradition; contemporary art and education; developing and
defending worthwhile art programs; revising art history; relativism,
evaluation, standards, and the possibility of artistic growth; depth
versus breadth; children, teaching, and learning.
REQUIREMENTS
Students will be expected to participate in class and group
discussions; respond to a number of question sheets in paragraph
form; write a critical paper on a chosen topic; and contribute within a
small group to a class seminar.
