COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides an introduction to environmental education, specifically in terms of qualitative and
quantitative techniques used in environmental studies. Readings and activities will focus on ecological
thinking and holistic approaches in environmental reasoning, with a view to constructing
interdisciplinary approaches and activities for school curricula.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Explore how mathematical reasoning impacts environmental curriculum and instruction
Participate in a stewardship training workshop/authentic environmental assessment that includes
scientific, mathematical and socio-cultural perspectives
Develop environmental education lessons and activities that include mathematical reasoning
Critically examine different approaches to environmental education
REQUIREMENTS
This is a Pass/Fail course. To achieve a passing grade all assignments must be completed including
weekly in-class activities and take-home projects. Projects include an individual "Environmental Me"
assessment and a group "Community Involvement" project to be presented in class.
