Dear Summer Institute Participant.
DURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA VISA 1S6
'Iètephone: (604) 291-3395
Welcome to the 1992 Summer Institute in Environmental EdUcation. As a
student In the section of Education 452-8, being offered at our Kelowna
Tele-Learning Centre, you may wish to have some Information about the for-
mat of the course. This letter should provide some basic information. If you
wish additional assistance, please call the Tele-Learning Centre in Kelowna
at 762 7600. Our secretary Is in the office In the mornings, so that is the
best time to call to be sure of getting an answer.
The Summer Institute In Environmental Education is offered as a total im-
mersion course. If you are taking the program for credit you should be regis-
tered in Education 452-8. (Note that In previous summers we used two 4
semester hour courses, Education 452 and 462 for this program. This summer
we are using only Education 452, but the value of the course has been raised
to 8 semester hours.). There are two sections of the course, one on the lower
mainland, offered
by
Brenda
Krause and Harold Krische, and the one In
Kelowna, offered by myself and a number of resource people. Please make
certain that you are registered for the coi-rect section. Both sections are
fully enrolled, with the limit being set art 50 students. There are people
waiting to get in If spaces appear, so, if for some reason your plans Change,
p
lease call the people at Undergraduate Programs at SFU (291 3614) and let
them know you are not going to attend, It will also be helpful if you call my
office at the TLC as well.
The SIEE is an Intensive, total immersion program. The advantage this offers
Is the chance to work hard in a shorter time period than the regular Summer
Session. The disadvantage is that the program is Intensive and moves along
very quickly. Our format Is to operate Monday-Friday, from approximately
0900-1530 or 1600 each day. Typically we use Tueday-Thursday f or formally
scheduled course events and classes, and leave some Mondays and Fridays
open for field work, group meetings, and special events. We do try to leave
the Centre open as much as possible on the weekends as well. The TLC has a
fully equipped computer lab and this is available for your use. In the normal
course of events we do not schedule class meetings or sessions on the week
-
ends. As you are probably aware, the July 1 Canada Day holiday falls on
Wednesday this year. This is an official university holiday so classes are
cancelled. it seemed odd tome to have the SIEE begin on Monday or Tuesday,

stop for one day on Wednesday, and then recommence on Thursday. Moroever,
I know that many school districts are stopping classes late in June and that
a lot of other businesses and professions are using Monday, June 29 as a
holiday In order to give their staff a holiday weekend. Hence, I have decided
to modify the first week of the Institute as follows: the first day of classes
In the Summer Institute in Kelowna will be Thursday, July 2. We will
meet at the Kelowna Tele-Learning Centre (see attached map) at 0900. We
will hold classes on July 2, July 3, and Saturday July 4 We will then begin
again on Tuesday July 7, and will keep to our normal pattern thereafter. The
last day of classes will be Thursday, July 23.
Last year's students spent one day at the McQueen Lake Environmental Study
Centre In Kamloops. As a result of feedback from the students we have de-
cided to spend a longer time period there this summer. So, we have arranged
to stay at McQueen Lake In the second week of the course from Tuesday
morning, July 7 until Thursday afternoon, July 9. This trip gives us a chance
to study natural systems on a more sustained basis. McQueen Is an ideal spot
for forest and pond studies. The Environmental Study Centre is operated by
the Kamloops School District. It provides cabin style sleeping accommoda-
tion and cooking facilities on gas ranges. However, you will need to plan to
bring along a sleeping bag, some sort of air mattress or foam pad, personal
clothing and eating gear, and notebooks, binoculars, etc. We will take some
time during the first days of the course to allow you to plan food with other
members of the group so that you can pool resources with other students for
cooking. We will also give you further details about equipment at that time,
Please note: we will meet at the base of the Lac du Bois Road, in North
Kamloops, at 1000 on July 2. Students who live in Kamloops can go directly
to the meeting point. Students who live in other spots or who are living in
residence In Kelowna may wish to car pool with other people for the trip to
Kamloops. We will be wrapping up in Kamloops in the early afternoon on July
9. I am planning to avoid a formally scheduled whole class event in Kelowna
on Friday July 10, but there may be an optional activity on that day.
Other than the McQueen Lake trip we will be working on a day triA basis for
the rest of our time. We do a lot of fieldwork In the course so you will be
out and about in the Kelowna region for at least a portion of most days, Be-
cause we do spend a lot of time in the field you are advised to have comfort-
able walking shoes, a good sun hat, sun glasses, and comfortable outdoor
clothing. We do some work In the woods and fields and some in downtown
urban settings, so plan your clothing with this In mind. A clip board and day
pack are also very useful In this course, It Is hot and dry In the summers In
the Okanagan
g
o a thermos or water bottle can also be helpful. Most morn-
ings we do meet at the Tele-Learning Centre before going Into the field. This
gives us a chance to arrange to pool transportation and thereby cut down on
the use of cars.

Last summer a number of students lived in residence at Okanagan College.
The college built new residences In 1990 so we have been taking advantage
of them for this program. However, we do not operate these residences.
Residence costs and details should be arranged through Okanagan College..
The person to contact, If you haven't already, is Ms. Dana Webster, at 862
5480 or through the main switchboard at 762 5445. These residences are
apartment style
With
students sharing common kitchen facilities. They
aren't fancy, but they are adequate and fairly new. They are a short walk
from our site on the college campus on KLO Road in Kelowna.
We intend to Introduce you to the field of Environmental Education by looking
a Wide range of issues and settings. We gear this course to all disciplines,
including sciences, Language Arts, Social Studies, and the Fine Arts. It Is our
Intention to make the course useful to teachers from K- i 2 and to model
Ideas about curriculum integration and performance-based assessment. We
also hope to contribute to your own professional development as teachers by
providing you with the opportunity to Improve and develop your own knowl-
edge of human-environment interactions. This Is the 21st summer of these
Institutes, I am looking forward to this summer and I hope that the program
will be personally and professionally rewarding for you.
See you In Kelowna on July 2,
Sincerely,
Milton McClaren, Ph.D.,
Associate Professor.
