452-& Environmental Education
Will address the design of multi-disciplinary educational programs to develop awareness
of the urban and natural environment and provide students with operational experience
under field conditions.
This summer the Summer Institute in Environmental Education will once again be
offering the summer program based in the lower mainland. The program is organized as
a Summer Institute, meaning that the focus of immersion in an 8-semester block will be
retained. Sessions will be held full days, Monday to Thursday, each week. There will be
at least one overnight field trip away from the course site. An optional weekend overnight
trip or optional Friday day trips may be offered occasionally over the course of the month.
It is therefore not expected that students enrolling in EDUC 452 will take other courses
concurrently during summer session.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Summer Institute in Environmental Education is an interdisciplinary program that
addresses the educational implications of human-environment interactions. It is
appropriate for teachers, recreation workers, naturalists and park workers with
backgrounds in a wide range of subject fields and with teaching levels from kindergarten
to adult. The program will examine environmental themes from the perspective of their
potential to develop awareness, understanding, research and problem-solving skills.
Topics covered will include environmental awareness and action strategies,
environmental curriculum development, human-environment relationships,
environmental ethics, neighborhood and community studies, outdoor education and the
use of the many resources available.
COURSE ASSIGNMENTS
Student assignments will include curriculum and program planning and development
activities, as well as specific in-course tasks addressing various course contexts.
FIELD ACTIVITY FEE
$ 35.00 (to partially cover additional field expenses. These fees will be paid as part of the
regular fees.)
