Summer 1991 Programme Theme:
Environmental Education and Global Education -
Powerful Fields for Curriculum Integration
The Royal Commission on Education and the subsequent new program outlines
have recommended that schools examine ways to create a more meaningful
curriculum by combining existing disciplines around topics which require an
interdisciplinary and integrated approach. One such field of study is that of the
human environment considered as a global, national, regional, local, and
personal issue. This summer the Summer Institute in Environmental Education
will make this its theme and will provide an educational experience for teachers
and other educators which will consider not only the educational implications and
significance of current human-environment interactions but which will also
examine strategies for and issues in curricular integration from K-12.
In the Summer of 1991 the program will be offered through an intensive, field work
and case study approach. The program will be located at the SFU Tele-Learning
Centre in Kelowna, B.C. This program will be of particular interest to teachers
involved in the Southern Interior Telecommunications Project, but it will also be of
interest to teachers from across B.C. and Canada. Arrangements are being made
through the Division of Continuing Studies at Okanagan College in Kelowna to
make residence accommodation available in the new College Conference Centre to
students who need accommodation. The conference centre is located a short walk
from the SFU Tele-Learning Centre.

This program will make extensive use of urban, rural, and wilderness
environments in the south-central interior, and will entail regular field work as
well as classroom and laboratory activities. It is, therefore, expected that students
enrolling in Educ. 452/462 will not register for other courses concurrently during
summer session.
This program will be offered in an intensive format beginning July 2, 1991 and
ending July 26. The course will meet for full days Tuesday - Thursday and
student individual and group project and field work will occur on Mondays and
Fridays. The course will not normally meet on weekends, but the Tele-Learning
Centre Laboratory and computer facilities will be available to students.
