ITS SUMMER INSTITUTE IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
PLACING EMPHASIS ON THE THEME
BRITISH COLUMBIA
AS A
MARITIME PROVINCE.
THE INSTITUTE WILL
EXPLORE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LAND AND SEA AT
THE OCEAN SHOREZONE, AND WILL USE THE THEME TO
EXAMINE MANY ASPECTS OF HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT
INTERACTIONS AND TO RELATE THEM TO TOPICS IN THE
CURRENT B.C. ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY CURRICULA.
THE PROGRAM TAKES AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH
AND SHOULD BE OF INTEREST TO TEACHERS OF ANY SUBJECT:
ELEMENTARY OR SECONDARY. EXTENSIVE PREVIOUS BACK-
-GROUND IN SCIENCE OR SOCIAL STUDIES IS NOT REQUIRED.
THE PROGRAM COMBINES TWO 4 SEMESTER HOUR CREDIT
COURSES: EDUCATION 452 & EDUCATION 462.
STUDENTS IN THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
PROGRAM MAY USE THE PROGRAM FOR CREDIT

THE SUMMER INSTITUTE IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
IS DEVOTED TO THE THEME OF HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT
INTERACTIONS. THE PROGRAM ALSO ADDRESSES THE
GENERAL TOPIC OF HOW WE CAN DEVELOP INQUIRY AND
THINKING SKILLS IN STUDENTS. IT IS AN ESSENTIAL
ASSUMPTION OF THIS PROGRAM THAT STUDENTS DO NOT
THINK IF THEIR "LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS " DO NOT FOSTER
THINKING. IT IS A FURTHER ASSUMPTION THAT STUDENTS
HAVE MANY DIFFERENT LEARNING MODALITIES WHICH
SCHOOLS SHOULD CELEBRATE AND EMPOWER--V I SUAL,
TACTILE, KINESTHETIC, AUDITORY, ETC., AND THAT THESE ARE
DEVELOPED BY USING A VARIETY OF LEARNING
