possible extended field experiences.
In the summer of 1984 this program will be offered in the S.W. Coastal
Region of British Columbia, an area rich in beauty, natural and human
resources. The theme of the institute will be "British Columbia as a Maritime
Province." This will place the focus on B. C. as an interface between the
land and the Pacific Ocean, including the inland waterways, inlets, estuaries,
rivers and harbours. The program will look at the historical and contemporary
significance of B. C. 's coastal location and of its ocean environment as a
source of beauty and recreation, as a resource, and as a vital avenue of
transportation. Patterns of human use and abuse of the oceans estuaries and
coastlines will be investigated and future possibilities will be considered.
The program will.make extensive use of field travel and field experiences
/ wherever possible. It will relate the theme to the B. C. public school and
college curriculum from kindergarten - adult, but it will also consider the
coastal environment from the standpoint of careers in recreation, travel,
tourism, resource management and planning where these have educational
components.
While the summer institute normally is attended by many student teachers
and practicing teachers, it is open to persons with other interests, including
a vocational interest related merely to knowing more about this rich and
interesting complex environment.'nvironment.
'
The two credit courses which comprise the
program may be used as components of the minor in environmental education
within the faculties of education, arts, science, or interdisciplinary
