Course Description:
This course deals with a variety of approaches, teaching strategies and curricula, for teaching French as a second
language in elementary and secondary schools.
Objectives:
• To enable students to identify their own linguistic needs (grammar, vocabulary, syntax, pronunciation) as learners of
French and to put into action an individualized plan aimed at increasing their knowledge of and competency in the
language.
• To briefly present current pedagogical principles of second language learning and to introduce students to the important
components and recommendations for the B.C. Core Curriculum (5-7).
• To offer opportunities for hand-on experience learning and teaching a second language within a
communicative/experiential class setting.
• To allow students to examine and evaluate a variety of commercial French Second Language programmes, products and
materials, and to familiarize themselves with the pedagogical language needed in the the Core French elementary
classroom.
• To present the CALL program and introduce various internet sites that complement a F.S.L. classroom
• To introduce students to the language, history, and culture of several French-Canadian regions.
During the course students will endeavour to improve their personal competency in French through a variety of
activities based on current elementary Core French teaching strategies. Students will also be asked to participate as
instructors (of mini-lessons) in a variety of activities aimed at improving their fluency in french, their understanding of
French culture, and their familiarity with communicative/experiential second language pedagogy.
Requirements:
• Attendance and class participation in all classes and activities.
• Participation in various group activities (teaching and learning tasks, role plays, etc.) focusing on language concepts,
themes, and tasks commonly explored in the elementary Core French programme.
• Personal written responses to selected readings and experiences in the French classroom.
• The development and presentation of an elementary F.S.L. curriculum design (unit plan) or a Portfolio of F.S.L.
resources.
