Course Description:
This course is geared to practicing and prospective elementary and secondary teachers who wish to
address issues of justice, law and citizenship through the courses they teach and the classroom culture
that they create. These issues are present in almost all curriculum areas, most overtly in Social Studies,
Language arts/English, Career and Personal Planning and Social Responsibility.
The course focuses on the resources, methods and strategies to help students become more legally
literate, more attentive to social justice, and more cognizant of citizen rights and responsibilities.
Participants will engage with such learning strategies as: case study, mock trial, mediation, justice circle,
restorative justice, community-based field study. The course is designed to be highly interactive, and
will involve students conducting a mock trial, mediation and other such simulations and role-plays. The
course also addresses the important dimension of the informal curriculum and how teachers can model,
practice and support justice, care, and democratic processes.
