COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is a methodology course which examines different ways that legal topics, concepts, and skills can be integrated into
various subject areas from kindergarten through grade
12.
Law is an integral part of the school curriculum. Legal concepts, issues and skills are embedded in such subjects as
Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Consumer Education, Career and Personal Planning, and Law
12.
Teachers also
convey notions about law through the hidden curriculum of their classrooms -- in the way they handle decisions, manage
conflict, and interact with students.
In this course teachers and prospective teachers will explore law-related instructional strategies, review and develop
materials for use in their classrooms, examine community resources, and learn to tailor these learnings to particular
students and groups. Students enrolled in this course participate in three off campuses classes, a mock trial held at the
law courts, a community field study, and an institutional visit. A number of special guests from the community will
present in the course.
SAMPLE TOPICS:
• Rationale and goals of law-related education.
• Law in the formal and informal curriculum of the schools.
• Using community resources
• Law-related instructional strategies (e.g., mock trials, moot appeals, case studies, story drama).
• Internet resources and the "Law Connection"
• Developing classroom materials.
REQUIREMENTS
Report on a field study, participation in a mock trial or moot appeal, development of a resource-based curriculum unit,
preparation of a four page paper, attendance and participation in class.
