Law for the Classroom Teacher

PREREQUISITE:
60 hours of credit. (No prior legal knowledge or experience is required.)
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This introductory law course will provide teachers, administrators, and undergraduates
interested in teaching with a basic understanding of the Canadian legal system. The course
begins with a brief look at the nature and purpose of law, categories of law, and the impact of
the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Students will then examine some specific areas
of law as well as different ways of resolving disputes. Classroom activities will incorporate
teaching strategies such as case studies, mock trials, and small group discussions.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Students will be evaluated on the basis of:
• 30% - class participation. Assessment measures will include attendance and
active classroom participation, including any mock trials and other simulation
exercises.
• 40% - short assignments based on information presented in the required text, in
class and in any additional readings.
• 30% - the development of a law-related classroom activity.
