COURSE DESCRIPTION
This introductory law course will provide teachers, administrators and undergraduates interested in
teaching with a basic understanding of the Canadian legal system. The course begins with a brief look at the
nature and purpose of law, where laws come from, the structure of the court system, and how laws are grouped
into different areas. Once the foundational framework is in place, students will examine specific areas of law,
focusing on important principles and concepts as well as the processes used to resolve legal disputes. Areas of
law to be studied include:
- criminal and young offender law
- tort law
- family law
- contract and consumer law
- individual rights and freedoms (human rights, Charter rights)
Classroom activities will incorporate teaching strategies that are particularly appropriate for
teaching about the law, such as mock trials, role playing, small group discussions, and use of community
resources.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Students will be evaluated on the basis of class participation, short weekly assignments, and a research
paper or unit plan. There will be no final examinations
