COURSE DESCRIPHON
Multicultural education can be defined as
"an education in which cultural diversity is seen and
used as a valuable resource to enrich the lives of all, and
in which every child has the chance to benefit from the
cultural heritage of others, as well as his or her own."
This definition is the foundation of the course which is open to all educators
who want to increase awareness and sensitivity to their own and others
cultural backgrounds in order to develop positive ways of working in a
multicultural community.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1.
To increase understanding and awareness of the impact of our culture
and the culture of others on teaching and learning situations.
2.
To provide opportunities to be exposed to the cultural experiences of
particular individuals and groups in order to foster a positive attitude
towards diversity.
3.
To increase awareness and understanding of cultures in contact.
4.
To understand the components of curriculum development to combat
bias, stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination.
5.
To become acquainted with the resources available for multicultural and
racism education.
6.
To become familiar with contemporary issues in multicultural
education.
