COURSE OBJECTIVES
1)
Become familiar with the theories and practices involved in multicultural
education and their relationship to other areas of education.
2)
Learn to evaluate curriculum and other materials for ethnic bias.
3)
Increase awareness of the negative effects of prejudice, discrimination and
stereotyping, and their manifestations in schools and other important social
institutions.
4)
Gain knowledge of the histories and contributions of minority ethnic groups
in Canada and awareness of cultural diversity in Canadian society.
5)
Develop understanding of the social construction of 'race', ethnicity and the
role of racism in social structure.
6)
Further self-awareness in light of cultural and racial diversity.
7)
Explore key contemporary issues in Canadian society.
