MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course should appeal to educators who want to meet the challenges posed by our
multicultural school population. Through group discussions, case studies, role plays,
community resources, audiovisual and curriculum materials, practical applications of
concepts will be developed. Multicultural education will be presented as enriching our
schools.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1.
Develop an understanding of culture and multicultural education within the
Canadian context.
2.
Understand some of the cultures, religions and value systems represented in British
Columbia schools.
3.
Understand the dynamics of bias and racism, both covert and overt, in textbooks,
teaching materials, instructional techniques and testing.
4.
Develop processes whereby the ethno-cultural mix of our schools can be seen as
enhancing the educational experience of teachers and students.
5.
Identify and evaluate materials and programs which promote multicultural
education.
6.
Examine problems and problem solving strategies which relate to the needs of a
multicultural classroom.
ASSIGNMENTS AND EVALUATION
1.
Attendance and class participation.
2.
Study of an ethno-cultural group represented in British Columbia schools.
3.
Study of a specific multicultural issue in present-day Canada, such as ESL needs,
immigration policies.

Development of a lesson aid, lesson plan, or resources list related to multicultural
education.
5.
Demonstration of a multicultural classroom activity, such as cross-cultural
communication, cross-cultural counselling, conflict resolution.
6.
Review of an item from a suggested reading list of multicultural materials.
