COURSE OBJECTIVES: To explore and develop effective strategies capable of
accommodating the divergent needs of students from a
a wide variety of ethno-cultural backgrounds in a single
classroom setting.
COURSE ELIGIBILITY: Open to students in the Faculty of Education.
Open to students in other faculties (contact me 434-2398).
REQUIREMENTS: -Regular attendance is required
-A 10-minute student seminar (20 marks)
-To design a multicultural learning activity (10 marks)
-To conduct a cross-cultural interview (20 marks)
-Completion of two short essays (50 marks)
PROPOSED TOPICS FOR SESSIONS:

Trends in Education, 1960 to the present.
2.
Personality E 1
Culture (establishing an identity).
3.
Discrimination, Racism and the need for Human Rights.
4.
The Socially Disadvantaged (including indigenous peoples and students
in and from developing cultures and countries).

Language Programs: - Official (ESL/FSL)
- Bilingual
Heritage (maintenance. : enrichment)
7.
Adult Literacy.
8.
Special Problems of Contemporary Youth.
9.
Multicultural Philosophies and policies and their relationship to
Education. Immigration Policy.
10.
Multicultural Education as it related to specific subjects and subject
areas of the curriculum.
11.
Stereotyping in texts and the media (strategies for eliminating it).
12. Values Education (pros and cons).

This course includes sections on the social dimensions of multi-
culturalism, the psychological dimensions of multi-culturalism,
curriculum development in multi-cultural education, and specific
issues (Indian education; community control and parental choice
and Second Language Programs). It is of interest to those con-
cerned with the history and current status of minority ethnic
groups in Canada, and either preparing to be a teacher or already
teaching.
