    COURSE DESCRIPTION
    1.
    This course will begin with an analysis of the historical
    background of relevant social issues to the present concern
    with cultural differences in education. In doing so, the
    interaction of the host group and various culturally distinct
    segments of both new Canadians and indigenes will be examined
    in order to grasp the differ ing perceptions of cultural
    difference.
    2.
    Various aspects of Canadian educational policies and their
    implications for culturally distinct groups will be examined.
    3.
    Strategies for teaching in a cross-cultural setting will be
    examined and the use of curriculum materials for teaching
    about cultural differences, discussed.
    The following themes will serve as a basis for discussion in the
    course:
    1. Historical background to the presence of cultural differences
    in Canadian schools. Who is an immigrant child?
    2.
    Culture Shock and Culture Conflict: examination of concepts
    of adjustment, adaptation, integration, assimilation and
    pluralism.
    3.
    Multi-culturalism.
    4.
    Bilingualism.
    5. Theories of prejudice acquisition.
    6.
    Theories of prejudice reduction: attitude change in children.
    7.
    Values in education.
    8.
    Social Class and school achievement.
    9.
    Education of Canadian Minorities: review of selected minorities.
    10. Teacher expectation and its effect on student achievement.
    11.
    Local Control and Community Schools.
    12. Role of Intergroup Contact in change of prejudice and Ethnic
    Relations.
    Expectations
    Each student will be expected to prepare an independent project,
    based on:
    1.
    experience of a classroom situation where children of several
    cultural/linguistic backgrounds are present.
    2. a close look at an agency, that provides social services to

    immigrant families and a description of the insights gained
    from such an experience.
    3.
    examination of present usage of curriculum materials and
    suggestions for modification of existing materials or
    "workable" alternatives.
    4.
    a review of two books related to some aspect of the education
    of immigrant children.
    5.
    a related alternative topic, to be initially discussed with
    the instructor.
    6.
    each student will be expected to serve as a discussion leader
    in one session and to participate actively in all other sessions.
