DESCRIPTION
Education is an inherently moral endeavour. Everything educators do (and do not do) sends messages to
learners about what is acceptable or unacceptable by that society. This course will provide an opportunity to
consider some central ethical issues as played out in the realm of education. The texts will frame the inquiry;
however students are expected to contribute to the course with explorations of issues of personal relevance.
Rather than looking for answers or solutions, we will visit and revisit issues that define and provoke us as
individuals and members of diverse communities.
OBJECTIVES
The seminar aims at cultivating in and amongst students:
• Abilities to reflect (written and orally) on practices in light of theories, and vice versa.
• Abilities to compose carefully conceptualized and reasoned arguments
• Abilities to actively engage in dialogues in a community of inquiry
• Abilities to read philosophical texts accurately and critically, and to employ philosophical vocabulary
• Abilities to identify and articulate personally meaningful ethical issues and work towards outlining
strategies for engaging these both practically and theoretically.
