DESCRIPTION
Global education is a cross- curricular approach to teaching which is based on concepts of interdependence,
connectedness and perspectives consciousness. It provides relevance to what students are studying by making
connections between the subjects, the school and the world. Global education encourages students to consider
perspectives other than their own. It allows students to examine their personal values, as well as the values of
their own and other cultures. It incorporates a variety of models of teaching and is inclusive of all grade levels
and subject matter. Global education is a holistic approach which empowers students by giving them
ownership of the knowledge and providing them with the skills to continue their learning throughout their
lives. It prepares students for citizenship in an interconnected, interdependent world.
This course offers students the opportunity to examine major concepts associated with global education; locate
global education concepts in curricula; to critically evaluate global education resources; explore teaching
strategies; and infuse their practice with global perspectives and a global approach.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
• to advance students' knowledge and understanding of the rationale for and key concepts of global
education: interdependence, interconnectedness and perspectives consciousness
• to explore global education concepts within British Columbia curricula and determine how to implement
them in their practice
• to locate and critically evaluate global education resources
• to explore ways of infusing students' teaching practice with global perspectives and a global approach
to education by developing curriculum based resources and a curriculum based unit linked to the British
Columbia Integrated Resource Packages
