EDUCATION 435-4 EDUCATIONAL THEORY AND THEORY CRITICISM
TO BE OFFERED IN VERNON, SPRING, 1974
The above course will be offered in Vernon in the four-month
Spring Semester, 1974. The instructor will be Dr. Cornell Hamm.
Teachers and others wishing to take this course should follow
the procedures outlined below:--
a.
Students who have previously taken S.F.U. credit courses
Those students who have been enrolled in credit courses at
S.F.U. within the last year will automatically receive pre-
registration material by December 7, 1973. (Please notify
the Registrar's Office if you do not.) This material must
be returned by December 14, 1973. Former S.F.U. students
who have been absent since Fall Semester, 1972, must notify
the Office of the Registrar of their intention to return,
preferably before November 19, 1973.
b.
Students who have not previously taken S.F.U. credit courses
Students who have not previously taken S.F.U. credit courses
must apply for admission by December 1st. (Late applications
will be processed only if resources permit, and in no case
will an application received after December 31st, be processed.)
Application forms may be obtained from the Office of the
District Superintendent, or from the Registrar's Office.
Registration instructions will be sent to a student after
his application for admission has been accepted.

CRITICISM

Course Description:
This course is designed for practising teachers who feel the need to reflect
systematically on the theoretical foundations of contemporary educational practices
and who at the same time wish to complete degree requirements.
It is a course in the social and philosophical perspectives of education and centers
around an examination of the nature and purpose of education and the extent to
which the modern school fulfills its function as an educational institution.
Among the specific topics to be dealt with are:
the point and purpose of education
conflicting social purposes of the school as an institution
assumptions underlying some alternative schooling proposals
'growth' and 'development' as educational models
the 'needs' doctrine in education
authority, discipline, and punishment
students' and teachers' rights
(moral) values education
Course Requirements:
Students are expected to attend two one hour lectures and participate in two hours
of tutorial discussions weekly. (Details of time, location, and other arrangements
will be announced later. At this point it is envisaged that the weekly lectures and
tutorials will be conducted on Mondays between 4:00 - 8:00 p.m.)
Students' work will be evaluated on the basis of participation in tutorials, essay
work, and possibly an examination.
