This course will identify and evaluate some of the general distinctions we
apply to the curriculum, such as that between the arts and the sciences,
or those subjects which are 'factual' and those which involve 'values',
and show how these abstractions are connected to practical policies and
specific decisions about what to include in or leave out of the curriculum,
and how to teach it. This will give use to many detailed questions about
how schools and teachers do or should (not) handle socially controversial
matters concerning morality, sexual conduct, religious bél i.ef, and politics.
Participants in the course will be encouraged to apply its themes to their
own areas of interest in education or schooling. There are no prerequi-
sites for this course.
