COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is concerned with several topics of interest to the professional
teacher. A number of classroom practices and teacher-related activities (as
outlined below) are philosophically examined. Assumptions underlying these
practices are made explicit, the structure and meaning of the arguments clarified,
and the merits of the arguments examined.

The teacher and the curriculum. (The concept of curriculum; the 'needs'
curriculum; child-centered curriculum; integrated curriculum; curriculum
for the gifted.)
c Teaching and related activities. (The concept of teaching; indoctrination and
conditioning; play, learning to learn, and learning by discovery; creativity,
imagination and brainstorming; critical thinking; skill acquisition.)
ci Teaching and moral considerations in the classroom. (Freedom, authority,
and respect for persons; discipline and punishment; values clarification and
moral education; open education and self-education.)
