This course is designed for teachers who plan to teach dance in the school system in arts, P.E.,
dance or classroom contexts. During the course we will look at a developmental progression of
teaching dance to primary, intermediate and secondary students with consideration for the
distinctive needs and abilities of each of these groups. Students will be expected to gain an
understanding of the movement elements and to use these in their developing work. We will take
a creative look at integrating children's literature, writing, and art with dance. Students will use a
variety of approaches to choreography as well as have opportunities to create, perform and
critique their own small group dance compositions. We will discuss lesson planning, assessment
and evaluation and study the Ministry of Education's IRP. Assigned readings will consider
contemporary issues related to the teaching of the arts and dance in education. Active participation
is a requirement of this course as much of the time will be spent... dancing!
