COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will introduce teachers to concepts, practices and issues related to the nature and nurture
of highly able and gifted learners. Participants will learn to recognize and challenge these students in
developmentally appropriate ways both in the classroom and through a range of programs and
services.
Participants will prepare assignments based on required reading prior to each class. This writing will
become the basis for in-class activities with classmates.
OBJECTIVES
Will include that students:
1.
Understand practical and theoretical conceptions of giftedness.
2.
Recognize the behavioral characteristics of gifted students and their sources.
3.
Design learning experiences appropriate for individual highly able learners.
4.
Understand the procedures used to select students for differentiated instruction.
ASSIGNMENTS
• Paper/Project - 40%
• Notebook - 50% (contains written responses to readings, in-class and-out-of-class activities, etc.)
• Interview - 10%
Grading: This course is graded on a Pass-Fail basis. All assignments must be completed at a pass
level in order to pass the course.

Kanevsky, L. (1999). Tool Kit for Curriculum Differentiation. Burnaby, BC: SFU.
(This book will be available for purchase in class.)
In addition, $25.00 will be charged for materials fee. The fee will be used to cover the cost of
photocopying required readings and handouts. These will be available for photocopying in the
Centre for Educational Technology.
