This course will introduce teachers to concepts, practices and issues related to the nature and nurture of gifted individuals
in educational settings. Participants will meet with a gifted student, as well as collecting knowledge and skills needed
to prepare learning experiences that will challenge these students in ways that will optimize their development.
Participants are expected to prepare journal entries based on assigned reading prior to each class. This writing provides
opportunities for in-class interactions with classmates. The knowledge in the reading will be applied and extended in
activities which model strate g
ies aDorooriate for eifted students.
OBJECTIVES
Participants in this course will:
1.
Examine current conceptions and definitions of giftedness.
2.
Develop their awareness of the behavioral characteristics of gifted students.
3.
Design learning experiences appropriate for highly able learners in the regular classroom or special programs.
4.
Learn about the types of instruments and the procedures used in the design of a process for selecting students
for gifted programs.
5.
Discuss the rationale for modified learning activities and/or programs for gifted students.
