Prerequisite:
EDUC 422 and either
401/402
or permission of the instructor for students with
experience working with children with high-incidence disabilities.
Course Description:
A review of classroom teaching practices that support learning for children with high-incidence
disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder, mild intellectual disabilities). Topics
include: introduction to inclusive teaching, teaching students with high-incidence disabilities, developing
effective teaching skills, assessment, literacy development and teaching in the content areas.
Evaluation:
Assignment #1:
Reflections
Preparation of two reflections (10 % each) on topics presented through reading assignments and review
of topics presented during class. (20 %)
Assignment
#2: Developing an IEP
Preparation of a comprehensive Individual Education Plan for a student with a high incidence disability.
(20%)
Assignment #3:
Lesson Plan
Presentation of a lesson plan demonstrating effective teaching practice(s) for students with high
incidence disabilities. (20%)
Assignment #4:
Developing a Unit Overview
Preparation of a comprehensive unit overview that demonstrates aspects of universal design and
differentiated instruction that would accommodate students with learning disabilities in the classroom.
