Course Description:
Education 426 is an introductory survey course about children and youth with
exceptionalities in Canadian classrooms. The course examines the cognitive, social, and
physical differences of children and youth with diverse disabilities, such as
communication disorders, intellectual differences, behavioral problems, developmental
disorders, etc. The focus of the course is on intervention approaches used to
accommodate and assist effectively children with special needs in the classroom.
Learning Outcomes:
1.
Become familiar with the terms and terminology used in the special education field.
2.
Describe the current trends in special education in.Canada.
3.
Demonstrate a sound understanding of the cognitive, social, and physical differences
of children and youth with diverse special needs.
4.
Learn different educational strategies and intervention approaches that are employed
with students with diverse special needs in the classroom.
Evaluation:
1.
Class attendance and participation in discussions —20%
2. Book and movie review (group project) - 30%
3.
Book and movie review presentation - 10%
4. Resource Journal - 30%
5.
Resource Journal presentation - 10%
